You Can’t Handle the Truthiness

Opinion/Notes: Letterman’s logo proves that logos are all about association: my first instinct on the first sentence I was going to write was that “Letterman’s logo was one of the great late night logos” but the truth is that’s a pretty shitty logo with really crummy typography (look at that “E”!) but because Letterman was so great, the logo carries that emotion. So, good riddance Letterman’s logo. Unfortunately Stephen Colbert’s logo isn’t that much better. It’s actually all kinds of wrong. From the tiny “the” and “with” to the weird combination of all uppercase and all lowercase letters to the “h” sticking its stem into the counterspace of the “H”. Then there is the thick and thin relationship between the “LATE SHOW” and “stephen colbert” type — it’s probably the same weight font but since “LATE SHOW” is half the point size, the thins get really thin and make it look like almost two different typefaces are being used. They were obviously going for a bookish feel but this looks like a snoozer.
